The Catholic Defender: Our Lady Appears in Italy in 1947: Our Lady of Montichiari (Rosa Mystica)

Our Lady appeared in Italy in 1947 in two notable instances that received approval: Our Lady of Montichiari (Rosa Mystica) to Pierina Gilli (recently affirmed by the Vatican in 2024) and Our Lady of Revelation (Tre Fontane) to Bruno Cornacchiola, with the latter receiving local approval in 1947 for devotion.

Both apparitions involved messages of prayer, penance, and reparation, but only the Montichiari/Fontanelle apparitions received recent, explicit Vatican approval for the devotion itself, while Tre Fontane's cult was approved locally in '47.

Our Lady of Montichiari (Rosa Mystica)

Pierina Gilli, an Italian nurse, who reported apparitions in 1947 and 1966.

Mary first appeared in a violet dress with three swords in her heart, representing a call for prayer, sacrifice, and penance. In later apparitions (starting July 13, 1947), the swords were replaced by three roses—white (prayer), red (sacrifice), and gold (penance).

On July 8, 2024, the Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith officially approved the devotion to Rosa Mystica, stating the messages do not contain theological elements contrary to Church doctrine.

Asked for prayer, penance, and sacrifice, appearing with three roses (white for prayer, red for sacrifice, golden for penance).

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) gave a "green light" for the devotion in July 2024, finding no doctrinal contradictions and highlighting positive fruits.

Our Lady of Revelation (Tre Fontane)

Bruno Cornacchiola, a former communist, reported apparitions in 1947. Bruno Cornacchiola, an anti-Catholic who had planned to assassinate Pope Pius XII, experienced the apparition on April 12, 1947, in Rome.

Mary appeared to Bruno and his three children in a grotto, holding a Bible and identifying herself as the "Virgin of Revelation".

This apparition is approved for faith expression. In 1947, the Vicariate of Rome approved the devotion, and in 1997, Pope John Paul II officially renamed the site "Holy Mary of the Third Millennium at Three Fountains".

Included messages for priests, conversion of sinners, and praying the Rosary.

The Vicariate of Rome approved the cult of the Virgin of Revelation (Maria Santissima della Rivelazione) in 1947, allowing for the veneration of a statue blessed by Pope Pius XII.

both 1947 Italian apparitions have significant church recognition, with the Montichiari devotion receiving recent, high-level Vatican endorsement, while the Tre Fontane cult was locally approved in the year of the apparitions.

The apparitions of Mary “Mystical Rose” and “Mother of the Church” are associated with Fontanelle, located south of Montichiari in the province of Brescia, northern Italy.

Pierina Gilli, the visionary, was born into a peasant family and worked as a housekeeper and nurse.

The title "Rosa Mystica" comes from Song of Songs 2:1, which is often translated as "I am the Rose of Sharon".

The apparitions of Mary the Mystical Rose, also known as Maria Rosa Mystica, are associated with Pierina Gilli and the town of Fontanelle in Italy:

1947 Pierina Gilli, a nurse and postulant for the Handmaids of Charity, first saw the Virgin Mary in a hospital chapel in Montichiari.

The Virgin Mary appeared in a violet dress and white veil, and asked for prayer, penance, and sacrifice.

On July 13, 1947, the Virgin Mary appeared again wearing white and holding three roses on her robe.

The roses represented the spirits of prayer, sacrifice, and penance.

The Virgin Mary also told Pierina that she wanted the 13th of July to be celebrated in honor of the Mystical Rose.

1966 The Virgin Mary appeared to Pierina again in Fontanelle, indicating a spring as a place of purification and source of graces.

1970 The Virgin Mary appeared to Pierina, showing her two gold medals in her hands.

On one medal, Pierina saw an image of Mary surrounded by roses, with the words "Rosa" and "Mystica" written around it.

1960–1975 The Virgin Mary appeared to Pierina, giving her the image for a medal and asking for a consecration to her Heart.
