The Catholic Defender: Onward to Consecration to St. Joseph

On Tuesday Evenings at 8:00 Central, Deepertruth Member Mark is leading a world wide Consecration to Saint Joseph based from the book, "Consecration to St. Joseph, The Wonders Of Our Spiritual Father", written by Father Donald H. Calloway.

What a wonderful outreach for anyone really wanting to grow in their faith. For me, despite the fact that I have always held St. Joseph to a high state due to his being the head of the Holy Family, showing his attributes are very special.

Consider the dream that Jacob received that are significant to the Israelite of yesterday. The dream at Bethel (which means House of God), Jacob sees angels ascending and descending up and down a ladder from Heaven and earth. To Jacob, this vision concerns the inheritance and obligation to the Israelite chosen by God.

Something much greater occurs as a result of the dreams given to St. Joseph. There were four recorded dreams found in the book of Matthew:

  • First dream: In Matthew 1:20–21, Joseph is told not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife, because she has conceived by the Holy Spirit.

  • Second dream: In Matthew 2:13, Joseph is warned to leave Bethlehem and flee to Egypt.

  • Third dream: In Matthew 2:19–20, while in Egypt, Joseph is told that it is safe to go back to Israel.

  • Fourth dream: In Matthew 2:22, because he had been warned in a dream, Joseph awakens to depart for the region of Galilee instead of going to Judea.

The significance of the dreams to St. Joseph concerns the coming of the Messiah into the world and God's plan of Salvation for the world.

John 1:47-51 offers an interesting parallel :

"Jesus saw Nathanael (Bartholomew) coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true Israelite.* There is no duplicity in him.” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God;* you are the King of Israel.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?* You will see greater things than this.” And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Interestingly, Jesus sees Nathanael referring to him as a "true Israelite", Jacob was whom God changed his name to Israel (Gn 27:35-36). Verse 51 is clear that the angels ascending and descending on the "Son of Man" is pointing to Jesus. The angel from the dreams to St. Joseph also points to Jesus as the Messiah. What was longed for and hoped for in the time of Jacob, are being fulfilled in Jesus. The ladder of Jacobs dream points to Jesus as he is the Mediator between God and Man, Heaven and Earth. The Virgin Mary, the Saints, the Sacraments, the Catholic Church, all of this works through Jesus Mediation.

Just as Jacob was an important servant of God in his time, more so was the importance of St. Joseph who Christ chose to be His "step-Father". Father Calloway's book highlights in a powerful way the faithfulness of St. Joseph. "In the midst of crisis, confusion, and a world at war with the Church, it's time to come home again to our spiritual father, St. Joseph. In this richly researched and lovingly presented program of consecration to St. Joseph, Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC, brings to life the wonders, the power, and the ceaseless love of St. Joseph, Universal Patron of the Church and the Terror of Demons."

Consecration to St. Joseph is a great powerful way to activate a sleeping giant. To get men to develop the gifts given to St. Joseph. Jesus through Mary and Joseph!
