St. Dismas is the patron saint of prisoners and repentant thieves. His story—being promised Paradise by Jesus in his final moments—serves as a powerful symbol for gang members that it is never too late to change their lives and find redemption.
St. Dismas, known as the "Good Thief" or "penitent thief," is the patron saint of prisoners, especially those condemned to death, as well as funeral directors and reformed thieves. Crucified alongside Jesus, he recognized Christ's innocence and asked to be remembered, receiving the promise of Paradise.
According to the Gospel of Luke 23:39–43, Dismas was one of two criminals crucified with Jesus who asked Jesus to remember him, to which Jesus replied, "Today you will be with me in Paradise".
Feast Day: His feast day is March 25, which is also the Feast of the Annunciation, as tradition holds that Christ was crucified on the anniversary of his incarnation.
Symbolism: He is considered a symbol of hope and divine mercy, representing that it is never too late for repentance and salvation.
"O God, who creates us, redeems us, and calls us by name, we pray for all who are incarcerated, those rightly convicted and those falsely accused. Help those in prison to sense your presence with them. Heal brokenness, cure addictions, and provide for their needs. Comfort them in despair, restore their hope, and protect them from violence and abuse. We pray through Jesus Christ, in whom we are claimed and freed for new life. Amen."
The primary organization associated with St. Dismas (the "Good Thief") that specifically targets gang members for rehabilitation is Homeboy Industries, founded by Father Greg Boyle. While many organizations use the name "St. Dismas" for prison and reentry ministries, Father Boyle’s work is the most famous for its focus on gang intervention and the "radical kinship" inspired by the redemption of St. Dismas.
Homeboy Industries (Los Angeles, CA)
Focus: The world’s largest gang-intervention, rehabilitation, and reentry program. Operates residential reentry centers across the U.S. to help people transition from incarceration back into society.
Services: Provides "hope, training, and support" to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated people. Tailored support for "intangible" needs like family counseling, medical assistance, and employment training to reduce recidivism.
Philosophy: Rooted in the belief that everyone is inherently good, much like the repentant St. Dismas on the cross.
Many local Catholic organizations, such as the St. Dismas Guild or Dismas Ministry, provide spiritual resources and bibles to prisoners, aiming to foster the same kind of final-moment conversion experienced by St. Dismas.
