The Catholic Defender: Fear Not, Jesus is Our Leader

The phrase "Fear not" is one of the most prominent commands in the Bible, serving as a cornerstone of divine comfort and reassurance across Jewish and Christian scriptures. It acts as a direct call to replace anxiety with faith

In scripture, the command does not mean humans should never experience the natural emotion of fear. Instead, it instructs believers not to let dread, anxiety, or terror paralyze them or dictate their actions.

The Core Promise: Whenever God or an angel says "fear not," it is almost always followed by the promise of presence: "For I am with you".

Hebrew Origin: In the Old Testament, it often derives from the root word yare, which can mean terror or dread, but also carries the connotation of awe, reverence, and respect

Greek Origin: In the New Testament, phrases like "take heart" or "be of good cheer" stem from tharseo, which translates to having courage or being of good comfort.

The phrase appears frequently throughout scripture to comfort people facing massive life obstacles

Isaiah 41:10: "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Luke 2:10: The angel announcing the birth of Jesus tells the shepherds, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people."

Matthew 10:31: Jesus reminding his followers of their worth: "Fear not therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows."

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13

For early Christians, this was a bold declaration. In the Roman Empire, citizens were sometimes forced to declare "Caesar is Lord." Refusing this and stating "Jesus is Lord" was an act of allegiance that could lead to severe persecution.

The Bible teaches that one day, all will recognize His lordship, as Philippians 2:10-11 states that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
