Blessed Mother Mary, Mother of the Holy Innocents,

The title "Mother of the Holy Innocents" (or Mother of the Innocents) refers to a deeply poignant and comforting Marian devotion. It links the Blessed Virgin Mary directly to the infants, children, and unborn souls who have been lost, echoing both the biblical narrative of King Herod's massacre and the modern pastoral care of grieving parents.

the Holy Innocents are the young boys, aged two and under, who were slaughtered in Bethlehem by order of King Herod in his attempt to eliminate the infant Jesus. This event is recorded in Matthew 2:16–18 and is commemorated on December 28th.

While Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt to save Jesus, Mary is spiritually united with the mothers of Bethlehem who wept for their children. In private revelations and historical devotions, Mary is often portrayed as mourning these first martyrs of Christ, gathering their innocent souls into her maternal care.

Patroness of Lost and Unborn Children: Mary under this title is invoked as the spiritual protector of all children, particularly victims of abortion, miscarriages, stillbirths, and early childhood deaths.

Comfort for Grieving Parents: Sacred artwork under this name—such as the prominent 2019 painting by Scottish artist Tommy Canning—frequently depicts Mary surrounded by floating infants and unborn children. The artwork is widely used in grief ministries to remind mourning families that their children are not forgotten, but are instead safely enveloped in the mantle of the Mother of God.

We entrust to your loving care all children throughout the world. Protect them from every danger—physical, emotional, and spiritual. Wrap them in your gentle mantle and guard their hearts from fear and harm.

We especially lift up to you the littlest and most vulnerable: the unborn, the abandoned, and those whose lives were cut short. Gather them to your immaculate heart and whisper to our aching souls, “They are with me.”

Father of all consolation, from Whom nothing is hidden, You know the faith of parents who mourn. Grant them comfort in knowing that their little ones are entrusted to Your eternal, loving care.

Our Lady of the Forsaken: In historical devotions, such as Our Lady of the Forsaken in Valencia, Spain, Mary is traditionally depicted with two of the Holy Innocents at her feet, symbolizing her role as a refuge for orphans and innocent victims.

The New "Rachel Weeping": Scripture compares the tragedy in Bethlehem to Rachel weeping for her children (Matthew 2:18). In contemporary spiritual reflections, Mary is viewed as taking up this mantle, grieving both for the historical infants and for modern instances where innocent life is cut short.
