The Catholic Defender: Knights of Columbus, Men of Honor

The Knights of Columbus is a global Catholic fraternal service order of men who lead with honor, stand together in faith, and serve with love. Often referred to as "men of honor" or a "band of brothers," members dedicate themselves to the core principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism

The organization empowers practicing Catholic men to grow in their faith, support their families, and make a meaningful impact through extensive charitable works in their communities.

Charity: The primary mission is to help those in need through volunteer hours and significant financial donations.

Unity: Members stand together to support one another, their parishes, and the global Church.

Fraternity: Developing a strong, Christ-centered brotherhood where men walk alongside and uplift each other.

Patriotism: Fully realized in the Fourth Degree, reminding members of their duty to both God and country. 

The concept of "honor" is most visibly demonstrated by the Fourth Degree Knights, the highest degree in the Order.

The Patriotic Degree: These members explicitly embody what it means to be a faithful Catholic and a faithful citizen. They lead efforts to support veterans and active military personnel.

The Honor Guard: Trained Fourth Degree members form a ceremonial Color Corps. They serve as visible signs of reverence and respect at civic parades, Eucharistic adorations, special liturgical Masses, and the funerals of fallen brother Knights.

The Fourth Degree Knights are the highest ranking members of the Knights of Columbus, a global Catholic fraternal service organization. Often referred to as "The Patriotic Degree," this level is dedicated to the principle of patriotism—fostering love of country and encouraging active Catholic citizenship.

The Title of "Sir Knight": Upon completing the Fourth Degree initiation ceremony (known as an exemplification), a member is formally dubbed with a sword and earns the title of Sir Knight.

The Public Face: They are the most visible members of the Order. They serve in Honor Guards and Color Corps at civic parades, religious processions, Eucharistic adoration, and funerals for fallen members.

Support for Veterans: A major operational focus for Fourth Degree members is conducting outreach, fundraising, and support programs for active-duty military personnel and veterans. 

When the Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882, three principles united its members: charity, unity and fraternity. At that time people feared that members of the Catholic faith owed their entire allegiance to the Church and could not be trusted as citizens of their country. Patriotism was added to the Order’s principles in 1900, based on the idea that Knights are loyal to both God and country.

Members who wish to live out patriotism together can join “the Fourth Degree.” Members of this degree have the special honor of holding the title “Sir Knight,” participating in color and honor guards and organizing programs that promote Catholic citizenship. They also become part of a Fourth Degree Assembly in their area. There are more than 3,500 Fourth Degree assemblies around the world.
