The Catholic Defender: Examines Evolution and Religion and Science

It was 1995, Troop Medical Clinic (TMC) 3, I had just transferred to MEDDAC at Ft. Campbell from the Rakassans, 3/187 Infantry.

I had been with them for nearly 5 years and now I am assigned to the TMC that supported the Rakassans.

That is a world of difference, but it would still be challenging.

One day, a female Soldier comes to my office and wanted to talk to me.

I took her to an exam room where she could talk in privacy. She took a few moments until, finally, she wanted to talk to me about an abortion she had recently committed. She was not married; she was having difficulty coping with what she done.

I asked her if she was Catholic and she replied “no”, that she was a member of the Assemblies of God. She told me that she had not been practicing her faith for some time. I encouraged her to make an appointment with her Pastor, or find her unit’s Chaplain if she needed to speak with a Professional.

I wanted to encourage her to get the kind of help she needed from her spiritual tradition. That was not the time to discuss religion except that I told her I was Catholic. I told her that as a representative of Christ, I forgive her for what she did. I think she needed to hear that.

We spoke for a short time but her issue and concern stuck with me for a good while. I have always been pro-life, politically; I have always supported pro-life Candidates for all elections. Since that time, I have felt a compassion for those who have had abortions who live with the knowledge they killed their children.

Despair can set in and take control of a young life. There was a national suicide hot line based out of California that reported 45% of those calling them for help were over abortion. Allot of women are faced with many issues that can make them feel trapped. Many times it is parents who are pressuring them to have abortions; sometimes it is a boy friend or even husband that pressures them.

Sometimes, it is the Mother who wants to end their pregnancies. I have spoken with women who displayed great courage and dedication giving life to their child. Other times, the child never had a chance.

Since 1973, we have had more than 60,000,000 babies killed by abortion. We have basically wiped out a generation of people who are not able to speak for themselves; they are forever silent except on that great and glorious day of the Lord. Their voice will be heard then.

In order to change lives, we must also work to change conditions that give women support and encouragement.

Love within the families, having a strong Father and Mother role model is very important. That is almost counterculture in today’s society as divorce is common, the family unit is under attack, and people are all over the country separated from loved ones.

Children are being raised without Fathers. Many Father’s are not acting responsible towards their children. In many cases, the Mother is trying to carry the load. Many Father’s do not lead by example. As a result, many Daughters do not have a healthy image of Fathers or Mothers. That has made it difficult for them to see God the Father or the Blessed Virgin Mary.

I have been watching some of the debates on FOX News and can't help respond to one of the liberals who appear on there speaking as if women are supportive to abortion as a voting block. I think the women's vote will be more pro-life than what the NOW Gang care to admit.

Most Americans oppose abortion on demand so depending on who is asking the question, abortion advocates can bend results. Women's issues will always need to be front and center, but liberals sugar coat the issues as they compete for tax dollars such as Planned Parenthood.

The Federal Government has paid billions supporting abortion many using this as a birth control. Millions of woman have fell into this trap, a sad consequence of the sexual revolution, a battlefield where often times women are the casualties. Where women are made objects and not respected as a child of God.

The answer really is found in Jesus Christ, Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. The problem and challenge is getting Christians to follow the Lord living out his teaching. To heal the family, individuals, we need God's love, forgiveness, and mercy. Love and Compassion does not equal toleration and acceptance.

Heaven intervened when the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego in 1531 to stop human sacrifice. Today, we call upon the Lord and His Mother to end the human sacrifices today. In our day and time, we have once thought concrete beliefs questioned, and today there seems to be no moral or doctrinal absolutes commonly excepted.

The golden rule appears outdated after watching the news or reading the daily newspaper. Humanistic religion (Secular Humanism) seems to be the infiltration of mainline denominations offering mere human explanation to the important miracles and signs Jesus performed.

There is everything from 'Black' liberation theology, liberation theology, to this 'Humanist theology' leading many away from traditional teaching. Jesus died on the cross shedding his blood liberating us from sin and death. What has been the most prevalent tool used to spring secularistic reasoning among even member of the Catholic Faith is Modernism?

All the 20th century Popes have condemned liberalism and modernism many times. How is there such wide spread rebellion and open dissension from official teaching of the Church? To identify the problem, one needs to observe and study the deserters of the faith, those who challenge the teachings of the Catholic Faith.

Some interesting clues ring out loud and clear. The false theory of evolution becomes uncovered. There are well meaning Christians who have accepted this as true. Some attempt to compromise Church teaching and rationalize it to fit evolutionist theory.

Yes, it is true that Pope St. John Paul II recognized an 'evolutionary' process in creation since the beginning. Where does Evolution differ from accepted scientific reasoning taught in public schools and even some private schools. There are two principle views in debate on Evolution 1. Micro, the Catholic version, and 2. Macral, the Darwinist position.

Is the Genesis account of creation literal? Were the days truly 24 hour periods, or can they represent a period? St. Peter writes, "But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day". God is not bound by time.

God is Lord of it! The point is, Micro Evolution can fit here and the Biblical account is not compromised. The significance of Adam is not lost. Why are Americans generally larger today than the average Chinese. It is because of diet, this is Micro Evolution.

The cross breeding of animals within their respective family or world is again Micro Evolution. Through cross breading, we have seen evolved faster horses, larger horses, shorter horses, even dancing horses. The same can be said for dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, and anything you can imagine. This is micro Evolution!

This differs greatly from Macro Evolution which is the teaching that life evolves from one life form to another such as; man grew from apes, and ultimately evolved from some lower life formed from the oceans.

To say that creation is an accident is like comparing someone's tennis shoes believing they in time evolved to fit my feet. Macro evolution challenges many doctrines such as Original Sin. If Adam and Eve did not exit, then Marriage would have no divine relevance. The overall facts point to God as Creator.

St. Paul writes, "The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness. For what can be known about God is evident to them. Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made. As a result, they have no excuse, for although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkend. While claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for the likeness of an image of mortal man or of birds or of four-legged animals or of snakes".

If anyone should be sitting on the fence, deepertruth wants to encourage you to run to the Lord, and come home to the Catholic Faith. May the Lord show you His path!

Over the years I have met many people who have told me they were agnostic or even atheist.

Being a Military man, I never truly believed in an atheist in a foxhole, yet, I think some people convince themselves what they think they are.

I once knew an older man who use to be a Baptist Deacon. He has long since rejected any kind of faith and today is an ardent atheist. He told me that he would not believe in God unless the Virgin Mary were to appear to him.

I've actually had that said to me more than once. I believe that "Secular Humanism" is a dangerous philosophy being taught in our schools.

The Secularists main objective is to take God out of public life and replace it with humanistic science. I don't want to make the mistake of saying all science is wrong because there are good Christians who have a scientific understanding for the things God has made.

I know that I was a thorn to my Biology Teachers because I didn't accept their Evolution as fact. As long as you had the right answers on test day, that was all they cared about.

I think Religion and science can co-exist if they can be bridged. It should not be an either or proposition. Consider the throngs of people following Jesus out into the wilderness wanting a sign.

They asked "What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you" (John 6:30)? Jesus responds by giving them the "Bread of Life" discourse (John 6:32-71). Many people began to walk away because they did not hear what they wanted to hear. They didn't get a sign they were wanting to see.

Science can be beneficial for mankind and sometimes there have been misinformation such as the case of Galileo.

Both sides had mistakes. During the time of Christopher Columbus, people believed the world was flat.

The question of whether the sun rotated around the earth or does the earth revolve around the sun?

These are basic questions that sometimes took along time to answer.

Can you be a good Christian and be on opposite sides of the question?

Can the Church be wrong on a matter of science?

The answer to this may not be so obvious. As Catholics, we regard the Church as infallible in concerns of faith and morals.

Because people place importance on things they can see and feel, it is easy to dismiss faith in God. That is what an atheist does, they place their trust upon the wisdom of science totally. Evolution is a fact, not a theory to them. Man is in control over his own destiny so the things of the soul they reject.

As a result of this philosophy being prevalent in the public schools, the colleges, the higher places of learning, many are being shaped without a spiritual benefit.

The stories in the bible become myths and legends. 2 Thessalonians 2:11 responds to the fact that Satan will manifest "signs and wonders that lie": "Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving power so that they may believe the lie, that all who have not believed the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be condemned".

Romans 1:20-23 states, "Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made.

As a result, they have no excuse; for although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened.

While claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for the likeness of an image of mortal man".

Paul writes to St. Timothy (2 Timothy 3:5) adding, "as they make a pretense of religion but deny its power. Reject them".

I served in the medical field for over 26 years in the Army. I do not believe in passing out condoms for "safe sex". That is a delusion, the risk is high if you choose to conduct risky behavior.

Secular Humanists sub-humanizes pre-born infants calling them a "fetus".

Fetus happens to be a Latin word meaning "small person", but when an abortionist uses the word, they change the term to mean a subhuman. They debate whether or not the "fetus" is potential life.

Secular science tends to diminish the value of human life. Religion (Catholic), on the other hand, instills the sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception till natural death.

Christians do far more in helping and contributing to the needy because we maintain a higher standard for human life.

If you teach children that they come from apes, perhaps they will act like it? When you teach children the love of God, they will act like it. Jesus Christ is the reason for the season, I choose life!
