The Catholic Defender Can the Virgin Mary hear and respond to the thousands of Rosarys prayed daily from Medjugorje. The Communist John Benjo of T4P asks what attracts me to Medjugorje

The spiritual journey of Medjugorje commenced on June 24, 1981, when six children shared their profound experience of encountering the Blessed Virgin Mary on a hillside near their village. These children, now revered as the visionaries, described seeing a radiant woman holding a child, who identified herself as the Queen of Peace. Ivanka Ivanković, Mirjana Dragićević, Vicka Ivanković, Ivan Dragićević, Marija Pavlović, and Jakov Čolo continued to receive apparitions over the years, through which they conveyed messages of profound peace, the power of prayer, and the call to personal conversion.

The central messages delivered by the Blessed Virgin Mary in Medjugorje emphasize peace, prayer, fasting, and conversion. These messages call on individuals to turn away from sin, pray daily, especially the Rosary, and fast on Wednesdays and Fridays. The Virgin Mary also urged the faithful to read the Bible, receive the Eucharist regularly, and seek reconciliation through confession. The simplicity and universality of these messages have resonated with millions, inspiring a renewed commitment to faith and spirituality.

Yes, according to Catholic theology, the Virgin Mary can hear thousands of Rosaries—or millions of simultaneous prayers from anywhere in the world—including those dedicated from Medjugorje.

Mary and the saints in heaven are alive, and Catholics believe they are not bound by the earthly constraints of time and space.

Through God's Grace: Mary does not hear millions of simultaneous prayers by her own human power, but rather through the grace and glory of God. God allows saints to understand and receive intercessory requests as part of their participation in His divine glory.

Catholics do not believe Mary answers prayers in place of God. Rather, they view her as a powerful intercessor who brings the petitions and Rosary intentions of the faithful directly to her Son, Jesus Christ.

The concept is often supported by biblical references, such as the Book of Revelation ( 8:3-4), which depicts angels and saints in heaven receiving the prayers of the faithful on Earth and presenting them to God.

Regarding Medjugorje, the Catholic Church allows official pilgrimages and recognizes the abundant spiritual fruits of the site (such as conversions, healings, and the awakening of vocations). In late 2024, the Vatican granted a nihil obstat (approval) for devotion to Our Lady, Queen of Peace at the site. This allows the faithful to adhere to the spiritual experience of Medjugorje, though the Church maintains neutrality on whether the specific apparition events are of supernatural origin.

Naturally having been and experienced much grace at Medjugorje, the many conversions, healings, miracles, the devotions I am in good company. Mary and the Hosts of Heaven are participating with all the prayer taking place at Medjugorje, as all over the world.

One of the most compelling aspects of Medjugorje’s spiritual significance is the numerous accounts of physical healings attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pilgrims suffering from various ailments, including terminal illnesses, have reported miraculous recoveries after visiting Medjugorje. These healings often occur during moments of deep prayer or participation in the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and confession. Medical professionals have documented some of these cases, adding credibility to the claims of miraculous intervention.

Numerous physical healings have been reported at Medjugorje since the alleged Marian apparitions began in 1981. While the Catholic Church focuses primarily on spiritual conversions, hundreds of pilgrims claim to have been cured of terminal illnesses, paralysis, and chronic tumors through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Terminal and Severe Illnesses: Complete remissions of advanced cancers, leukemia, and severe septicemia.

Neurological and Mobility Cures: Reports of individuals suddenly walking after years of paralysis or severe spinal conditions.

Visionary Experiences: Notable instances like the seer Vicka, who claimed to be completely healed of a severe brain tumor.

The "Yes" to Faith: Many testimonies stress that the physical healing was preceded by an internal spiritual surrender or conversion.

Spiritual vs. Physical: The parish of St. James emphasizes that while thousands of physical files exist, "healings of the heart" (restored relationships, relief from addiction, and returning to faith) areconsidered the true miracles of Medjugorje.

Parish Records: The St. James Parish office collects and archives extensive medical dossiers submitted by physicians and patients.

Medical Review: Independent doctors and Marian scholars have reviewed dozens of these cases, noting sudden, permanent, and "incomprehensible" recoveries that defied standard therapies.

The Vatican continues to monitor and evaluate these medical claims, prioritizing pastoral care and spiritual fruits over official declarations of supernatural physical miracles.

In addition to physical healings, Medjugorje is renowned for its spiritual healings. Many pilgrims arrive burdened with doubts, emotional wounds, and spiritual dryness. Through the sacraments, prayer, and the profound sense of peace that pervades Medjugorje, countless individuals have experienced deep spiritual renewal. Stories abound of pilgrims finding forgiveness, experiencing a profound sense of God’s love, and recommitting themselves to a life of faith and service.

Pilgrims to Medjugorje often report witnessing various signs and wonders, including the sun spinning in the sky, rosaries turning gold, and the scent of roses permeating the air. These phenomena, while not officially recognized as miracles by the Church, contribute to the mystical atmosphere of Medjugorje. Such experiences deepen the faith of those who witness them and serve as a testament to the divine presence in this sacred place.

One of the most significant spiritual sites in Medjugorje is Apparition Hill, where the visionaries first encountered the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pilgrims often climb this hill, praying the Rosary and meditating on the mysteries of Christ’s life. The climb is seen as a journey of penance and conversion, allowing pilgrims to leave their burdens behind and open their hearts to the messages of peace and conversion.

Cross Mountain, another important site in Medjugorje, features a large cross erected in 1933 to commemorate the 1900th anniversary of Christ’s crucifixion.

Pilgrims undertake the challenging climb up Cross Mountain, praying the Stations of the Cross along the way.

This ascent is a powerful act of devotion, symbolizing the pilgrim’s participation in Christ’s suffering and redemptive sacrifice.

The view from the top, with the cross towering above, provides a profound sense of spiritual fulfillment and peace.

The Parish Church of St. James serves as the spiritual center of Medjugorje. Daily Masses, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and confession are integral parts of the pilgrimage experience. The church grounds include a spacious outdoor altar, where large gatherings and liturgical celebrations take place. The sacraments celebrated at St. James Church are central to the spiritual renewal experienced by pilgrims, providing opportunities for deep prayer, reflection, and reconciliation.

The Blue Cross, located at the base of Apparition Hill, is another significant spiritual site in Medjugorje.

It marks a place where many of the apparitions occurred and where pilgrims often gather for prayer and reflection. T

The Blue Cross serves as a symbol of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s presence and a focal point for those seeking her intercession and guidance.

The spiritual significance of Medjugorje, with its messages of peace, prayer, and conversion, continues to inspire millions of Catholics worldwide. The stories and miracles associated with this sacred site are a testament to its profound impact on the faithful. Whether through physical healings, spiritual renewal, or personal transformation, Medjugorje offers a unique opportunity for deepening one’s faith and experiencing the presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The apparitions of Our Lady of Medjugorje are profound. But how much does Our Lady really hear us? How much does She really listen to us when we pray to Her, especially during the apparition? This story shows how much Our Lady’s presence at Medjugorje is for each of us.

An extraordinary moment in one’s life is being present during an apparition with one of the visionaries. It is beyond understanding to realize that during the apparition with Marija, one of the six Medjugorje visionaries, Our Lady appears to her in a physical, touchable form. She is truly present to Marija in body, not just spirit. To add that She appears as the woman in the Book of Revelation, Chapter 12, with stars about Her head leaves us without words to explain the extraordinary time we are in. During these apparitions, everything Our Lady does has a profound meaning. There is a reason for everything She does. One particular apparition at Marija’s house proves this. A Friend of Medjugorje, the founder of Caritas of Birmingham, was the only one present in the apparition with Marija and describes what happened:

“The apparition began in the usual way. Marija was kneeling before the statue of Our Lady and I was right next to her. During the time of the apparition, I had some special intention to present to Our Lady while She was appearing to Marija. I asked these requests in a low whisper so no one else in the room could hear them. While stating them, I felt a particular urge that Our Lady wanted me to really make these requests in a special way and it was what She wanted to hear. After the apparitions, Marija stunned me when she said that Our Lady accepted our prayers and blessed us and She did something unusual. Of course, I asked about this and Marija said that during the apparition Our Lady leaned over slightly with Her head tilted sideways toward us. I thought it strange and asked why Our Lady did this. Marija relayed that Our Lady was listening intently to our prayers and She turned Her ear toward us to actually hear us.”

“It was touching to know I had gone to Medjugorje with this special need to present these requests to Our Lady and She indicated Her attentiveness by this beautiful gesture. It taught me that while Our Lady can always hear our prayers, prayers really from the heart receive much more attention than those said with little intent on our part.”

Medjugorje visionary Marija did not know beforehand that a Friend of Medjugorje was there to be “heard” by Our Lady. This story shows that only a Heavenly Being could have known this and acted this way without any prompting from Marija.
