Heaton shared that losing her mother in the seventh grade led her to bottle up grief, which contributed to periods of depression and a "throwaway attitude" toward life during her younger years. While she spent years chasing her dreams in New York and was not always living completely for Christ, she noted that she never fully abandoned her belief in God. 

The major turning point in her life occurred after she moved to Los Angeles and participated in a church mission trip to an orphanage in Tecate, Mexico. While there, Heaton experienced what she described as "an overwhelming, otherworldly sense of peace". Following that trip, she made a radical prayer of surrender.

"Ok, I'm going to put you in the center instead of the acting." 

She noted that this was the first time she truly handed her acting career over to God, which completely reframed her priorities and public witness. Ironically, her Hollywood career truly began to roll only after she surrendered it to the Lord.
