The Catholic Defender: Nearly all of President Donald Trump's picks for his administration identify as Christian. and for public politics

President Trump avoided being assassinated by less than an inch on the anniversary of an apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. A coincidence or heavenly intervention?

Yes, the vast majority of President Donald Trump’s political appointees, administration picks, and endorsed congressional and gubernatorial candidates identify as Christian. This religious alignment is a deliberate aspect of his broader public politics strategy. He relies heavily on a bedrock of conservative Christian voters and rewards them with aligned personnel and public policies.

While Trump’s base is heavily associated with white evangelical Protestants, his actual administration and endorsed candidates represent a broader, eclectically Christian coalition:

Heavy Catholic Representation: A significant portion of his high-profile cabinet and administration picks are Catholic (some by conversion), including Vice President JD Vance, Marco Rubio (Secretary of State), and Linda McMahon (Education)

Protestant and Evangelical Blocs: His picks feature prominent mainline and evangelical Protestants, such as Doug Collins (Veterans Affairs—a Baptist pastor), Kristi Noem (Homeland Security—Foursquare Church), and Susie Wiles (Chief of Staff—Episcopalian).

Tom Homan is a lifelong, practicing Catholic who has publicly clashed with Church leadership over immigration enforcement and mass deportation policies.

Homan publicly stated, "The Catholic Church is wrong" and has urged the institution to "stick to fixing the church" and "stay out of politics".

Homan argues that border security is a moral and humanitarian issue. Citing his 40-year career in law enforcement, he contends that stopping illegal border crossings saves lives and prevents the atrocities committed by cartels and human traffickers.

Traditionalist Support: Despite his disagreements with Church leadership, Homan’s tough stance on border security resonates with many conservative Catholic organizations. He has received awards and backing from groups like CatholicVote, which has praised his approach to policy

Public Rebuttals: Homan has defended U.S. border security by comparing it to the Vatican, famously asking how the Pope can criticize U.S. border walls while the Vatican is enclosed by walls and heavy security

At a "Catholic Prayer for America" gala hosted at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, over 100 clergy members, led by excommunicated Bishop Joseph Strickland, held a benediction and jointly blessed a statue of Our Lady of Fatima intended for the Trump family.

The event, which took place on the Solemnity of St. Joseph, featured prayers that Trump would embrace the fullness of the Catholic faith and allow the statue to serve as a guiding compass. This ceremony was independent of the broader Roman Catholic hierarchy, as the local Florida bishops forbade their priests from attending, and Bishop Strickland was removed from his diocese by Pope Francis.

This blessing builds on similar religious imagery surrounding the former president. During his first inauguration, a Maronite priest presented Trump with another Fatima statue, which was kept in the West Wing. The statue has taken on added significance among some supporters, who have drawn spiritual parallels between the attempt on his life and the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, who credited his survival to Our Lady of Fatima.

Yes, Melania Trump identifies as a Catholic. Her religious affiliation made headlines in 2017 when she and her spokeswoman confirmed her faith after a private audience at the Vatican, where she presented rosary beads to be blessed by Pope Francis.

First Lady Status: Her identity as Catholic made her the first Catholic First Lady to reside in the White House since Jacqueline Kennedy.

Media and data reviews of his cabinet nominees and high-profile administration appointments show a clear majority of self-identified Christian officials, reflecting a significant presence of Catholic and Protestant figures. While his choices represent an eclectic mix of backgrounds compared to his first term, non-Christian appointments are rare exceptions within the overall group.

Catholics: This group is prominently represented in top-tier positions. Notable appointments include Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, and Education Secretary Linda McMahon

A broad range of Protestant denominations are represented across the administration. For example, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner is a Southern Baptist pastor, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent identifies as a French Huguenot, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is Episcopalian, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem belongs to a Foursquare evangelical community.

Tulsi Gabbard: Tapped as Director of National Intelligence, Gabbard is a practicing Hindu.

Howard Lutnick: Nominated as Secretary of Commerce, Lutnick is Jewish.

Lee Zeldin: Chosen to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, Zeldin is also Jewish.
