The Catholic Defender: Jesus found in the book of Obadiah

While Jesus Christ is not mentioned by name in the Book of Obadiah, as the book was written roughly 500 years before His birth, Christian theology finds Jesus throughout its 21 verses. As the shortest book in the Old Testament, Obadiah focuses on the judgment of the proud nation of Edom and the ultimate restoration of Israel.

Jesus is revealed, foreshadowed, and found within Obadiah's text.

1. The Ultimate Deliverer and Savior

The final verse of the book points directly to a messianic fulfillment:

"Then saviors shall come to Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s." — Obadiah 1:21

While the plural word "saviors" (or deliverers) historically referred to the leaders God raised up to restore Israel, Christian commentators view Jesus as the ultimate fulfilling Savior. Jesus is the ultimate Deliverer who ascends Mount Zion, conquers all spiritual enemies, and establishes the eternal Kingdom of God

2. The King of the Eternal Kingdom

Obadiah ends with the triumphant declaration that "the kingdom shall be the Lord’s". In the New Testament, Jesus arrives preaching that the Kingdom of God is at hand. Obadiah's vision of God establishing His rule over all nations is realized through Jesus Christ. He is the King who inherits this global, eternal kingdom of peace.

3. The Bearer of "The Cup" of Judgment

Obadiah warns of the coming "Day of the Lord," where the wicked nations will be forced to drink the wine of God's wrath and judgment:

"For as you drank on my holy mountain, so all the nations shall drink continually..." — Obadiah 1:16

Theologians connect this directly to the Gospels. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prays about a "cup", asking if it can pass from Him. On the cross, Jesus voluntarily drank the "cup" of judgment described by Obadiah. Instead of the nations being destroyed by their own evil, Jesus took that judgment upon Himself to offer salvation.

4. The Judge of the Proud

Obadiah is a fierce oracle against the nation of Edom for their intense pride, self-exaltation, and betrayal of their brothers. Obadiah warns that God brings down those who lift themselves up., Jesus is appointed as the final Judge of all humanity. He is the one who will execute true justice, humbling the proud and vindicating the oppressed.

5. The Perfect Brother

The conflict in Obadiah is deeply rooted in a fractured brotherhood; Edom (descendants of Esau) cruelly betrayed Judah (descendants of Jacob) during their time of ruin. Where Edom acted like a predatory enemy instead of a protective brother, Jesus became our "True Big Brother." Instead of exploiting humanity in our fallen state, Jesus draws close, protects His people, and sacrifices Himself to rescue us
