Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom God's love commits me here,
Ever this day [or night] be at my side,
To light and guard,To rule and guide.
Amen.
Throughout Scripture, we see the importance of angels and their role as intermediaries between us and God. A prime example of this is the Angel Gabriel appearing to Mary to announce to her that she would give birth to the son of God. But, beyond the known archangels, we recognize the role of individual Guardian Angels.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church affirms that “from infancy to death human life is surrounded by their [angels'] watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God" (CCC, n. 336).
“Do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father”. (MT 18:10)
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
"Guardian Angel, guard me from harm, protect me in sleep without cause for alarm. Keep me safe through darkness of night, and wake me gently with God's morning light. Amen."
"My good Angel, Thou comest from heaven; God has sent thee to take care of me. Oh, shelter me under thy wings... deliver my soul so that with thee it may praise, love and contemplate the goodness of God forever and ever. Amen."

A slightly expanded version is often used before bed: "Angel of God, my guardian dear... From sinful stain O keep me free, and at death's hour, my helper be".
Known for his close relationship with his angel, Padre Pio prayed: "Oh, my Holy guardian Angel, care for my soul and my body. Enlighten my mind that I may better know the Lord my God and love Him with all my heart..."
A more formal prayer of thanksgiving: "O most holy angel of God, appointed by God to be my guardian, I give you thanks for all the benefits which you have ever bestowed on me...".
The practice is rooted in scriptures like Psalm 91:11, which states, "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways".
For he commands his angels with regard to you, to guard you wherever you go. Psalm 91:11
The Catholic Church officially celebrates the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels on October 2nd.
These prayers are intended to ask for protection from physical harm, guidance in moral decisions, and companionship in spiritual growth.
To whom God's love commits me here, Ever this day [or night] be at my side, To light and guard,To rule and guide.
"To whom God's love commits me here" means God has entrusted you to the care of your angel.
It asks the angel to light (enlighten), guard (protect), rule (direct), and guide your actions.
It is often used to bring comfort, reduce fear, and encourage trust in divine providence.
historically linked to Reginald of Canterbury, an 11th-century Benedictine monk. The English version popularized in the late 19th century through the Baltimore Manual of Prayers.
The original Latin prayer is titled Angele Dei
It is often one of the first prayers taught to children. In the Catholic liturgical calendar, the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels is celebrated annually on October 2nd.
