The Catholic Defender: What is Truth?

Truth means nothing apart from God and cannot be adequately explained, recognized, understood or defined without God as the real source.

Pilate said to Jesus, “What is truth?

So when Jesus says, “I am the Truth” He means that he is the source and sustainer of everything in the universe.

Whoever walks without blame,

doing what is right,

speaking truth from the heart;

3Who does not slander with his tongue,

does no harm to a friend,

never defames a neighbor;

Psalm 15:2

When the biblical definition of truth is abandoned, unrighteousness will be the unpreventable result in a person or a society.

Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. 1 John 3:18

Whoever is blessed in the land will be blessed by the God of truth, and whoever swears in the land will swear by the God of truth. Isaiah 65:16

He who speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness utters deceit. Proverbs 12:17

Paul, a slave of God and apostle of Jesus Christ for the sake of the faith of God’s chosen ones and the recognition of religious truth,

in the hope of eternal life that God, who does not lie, promised before time began,

who indeed at the proper time revealed his word in the proclamation with which I was entrusted by the command of God our savior, Titus 1:1-3

The Lord is near to all who call on him,  to all who call on him in truth. Psalm 145:18

Buy truth and do not sell: wisdom, instruction, understanding! Proverbs 23:23

God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.John 4:24

Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. 1 John 3:18

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:8

Truth is the way God expresses himself, and without God, there is no truth to be known.

Scripture primarily defines truth as “a firm display of inner essence.” Standing before a ruler of the day, Jesus said “My kingdom is not of this world (order)… I have come into this world, to bear witness to the truth (of God's reign).”

Truth is that which is consistent with the mind, will, character, glory, and being of God. Even more to the point: Truth is the self-expression of God.

Conformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or has been; or shall be.

Righteousness; true religion. The Catholic Faith
