The Catholic Defender: The Story of Gary Sinise's Conversion to the Catholic Faith. Confimred on Christmas Eve in 2010

The story of Oscar-nominated actor Gary Sinise’s conversion to the Catholic Church is a unique journey that culminated in a secretly arranged confirmation on Christmas Eve in 2010. Detailed in his 2019 memoir, Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service, his road to Catholicism spans more than a decade and was profoundly shaped by his wife’s own spiritual transformation and the events of September 11, 2001
The catalyst for the family's faith journey began with Sinise's wife, Moira Harris. In the late 1990s, while on a journey to find an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting, Moira accidentally encountered a local Catholic church. This unexpected moment sparked a deep personal transformation.
Soon after, during a terrifying experience caught in a hurricane, she made a definitive turn toward the faith. She enrolled in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program and officially entered the Catholic Church at Easter in 2000. Despite Gary's initial surprise, the couple decided to enroll their three children in the local parish school.
Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the family’s local Catholic parish became a critical sanctuary and source of profound comfort. This national tragedy marked a significant turning point for Sinise, shifting his primary life focus from Hollywood acting to deep advocacy for military service members, veterans, and first responders. As he routinely supported his family's involvement in church life, the spiritual framework of the Church began to weave tightly into his charitable efforts.
After years of attending Mass alongside his family as a supportive observer, Sinise decided to quietly make the commitment himself. He secretly enrolled in private RCIA confirmation classes, intentionally keeping the preparation completely hidden from his family.
On Christmas Eve 2010, Sinise told his wife and children that he was taking them out for a holiday dinner at Morton's Steakhouse. En route, he diverted the car to their parish church. He surprised them by walking inside, where a priest was waiting to officially confirm him into the Catholic Church in a private ceremony.
