The Catholic Defender: Freedom isn’t Free/America, Freedom always comes at a high price

Freedom isn't Free/America, Freedom always comes at a high price Pope Saint John Paul II On Our Pilgrimage to Eternity, Pope Saint John Paul II frequently emphasized that true freedom is not merely doing whatever one wants, but the responsibility to choose what is good and true, often requiring sacrifice. Rooted in Christian faith, this freedom is a gift from Christ, bought at the high price of the Cross, and meant to be lived in obedience to divine wisdom.

It is not the "absence of tyranny," but the ability to live according to the truth of one's relationship with God.

"Freedom always comes at a high price," a reference to the sacrifice of Christ, which liberates humanity from the slavery of sin.

Freedom is inseparable from truth; submitting to moral law is, in fact, an act of true freedom, not bondage.

Pope John Paul II cautioned against viewing freedom as simply license or self-indulgence, noting that such approaches lead to the destruction of true human dignity.

He taught that freedom is an "extremely precious value, for which a high price must be paid" through generosity and readiness for sacrifice.

He often reminded young people that freedom is a challenge to be defended, sometimes even at the price of one's own life or blood.

He famously defined true freedom not as the license to do what we like, but as having the right to do what we ought.

He maintained that there is "no freedom without truth," arguing that absolute freedom without moral grounding becomes a burden or a "caricature" of itself.
