The Catholic Defender: The King and Queen of all Creation!

So Bathsheba went to King Solomon, to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. And the king rose to meet her, and bowed down to her; then he sat on his throne, and had a seat brought for the king's mother; and she sat on his right. 1 Kings 2:19

The Kings of Israel were never the wife of the King, but the Queens of Israel were always the Mother! So when the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, this is what is recorded:

"In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." Luke 1:26-33

From the Old Testament we see the foundation for what the New Testament would be planted. I have an interesting prophecy that predates 1 Kings 2:19 which the Chapter begins with King David's death and begins King Solomon's reign.

Lets take a look at Psalms 45 attributed to King David obviously as a much younger man than the King David who was on his death bed.

Here are the first 9 verses of Psalms 45:

"My heart overflows with a goodly theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe. You are the fairest of the sons of men; grace is poured upon your lips; therefore God has blessed you for ever. Gird your sword upon your thigh, O mighty one, in your glory and majesty! In your majesty ride forth victoriously for the cause of truth and to defend the right; let your right hand teach you dread deeds! Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; the peoples fall under you. Your divine throne endures for ever and ever. Your royal scepter is a scepter of equity; you love righteousness and hate wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows; your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia. From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad; daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir." Psalm 45:1-9

Who do you believe this prophecy is about? There is no question the first nine verses are talking about Jesus.

Compare Psalms 45:7, "Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows;

Hebrews 1:9, "therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with the oil of gladness beyond thy comrades."

Psalms 45:6, "Your divine throne endures for ever and ever. Your royal scepter is a scepter of equity; you love righteousness and hate wickedness."

Hebrews 1:8, "But of the Son he says, "Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever, the righteous scepter is the scepter of thy kingdom."

King David did not know Jesus, yet he had an interesting understanding of Jesus! Who is this "Queen" that King David refers to in vs 9? Remember, to this point there was no queen of Israel? That would begin with King Solomon as I shared at the top of this article. As King David had a glimpse of Jesus who would one day come and claim His Throne, there is this Queen figure as well.

Psalms 45:9-17 states, "From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad; daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir. Hear, O daughter, consider, and incline your ear; forget your people and your father's house; and the king will desire your beauty. Since he is your lord, bow to him; the people of Tyre will sue your favor with gifts, the richest of the people with all kinds of wealth. The princess is decked in her chamber with gold-woven robes; in many-colored robes she is led to the king, with her virgin companions, her escort, in her train. With joy and gladness they are led along as they enter the palace of the king.16 Instead of your fathers shall be your sons; you will make them princes in all the earth. I will cause your name to be celebrated in all generations; therefore the peoples will praise you for ever and ever."

Compare Psalms 45:9-17 with Luke 1:46-55:

Psalms 45:10-11, "Hear, O daughter, consider, and incline your ear; forget your people and your father's house; and the king will desire your beauty."

Luke 1:46-48, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden."

Psalms 45:17, "I will cause your name to be celebrated in all generations; therefore the peoples will praise you for ever and ever."

Luke 1:48, "for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed..."

"And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever." Luke 1:46-55

Psalms 45:1-8 is talking about Jesus while Psalms 45:9-17 is talking about the Virgin Mary giving us the biblical foundation that points to Jesus and Mary as King and Queen. Jesus is King as the Son of David and Mary is Queen being His Mother.

King David recognizes Jesus as "God" stating, "Therefore God, your God, has anointed you..." The Old Testament did not have the revelation of the Trinity and this is as close King David gets from knowing the whole truth.

Mary is 100% human, unlike Jesus who is Divine, she is human, but was given special grace to bring Jesus into the world. Mary was chosen among all women to be Jesus Mother going back to Genesis 3:15:

"I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."

St. John the Apostles describes the woman, the seed, and the serpent in much detail in Revelation Chapter 12:

"And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; she was with child and she cried out in her pangs of birth, in anguish for delivery."

A great battle breaks out and 1/3 of heaven falls and the devil is cast out. The end of the Chapter states, "Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea." Revelation 12:17

This brings all of us into the picture as those of us who accepts Jesus as Our Lord and Savior also has Mary as our spiritual Mother as well. This is Our King and Queen that seeks to reign in our hearts so that their reign will win souls for eternity in Heaven. Let's get busy!
