The Catholic Defender: THE ROSARY PATROL-DION DIMUCCI’S STORY AND THE HEALING ROSARY

In their book "THE ROSARY; Your Weapon for Spiritual Warfare", authors Johnette Benkovic and Thomas Sullivan include the story of Dino Dimucci.

In the book Dimucci penned with Catholic write Mike Aquilina, Dimucci tells the story of how he was healed of 14 years of gang activity and drug abuse through the little-known "Healing Mysteries" of the Rosary.

Rising to fame in the late 1950s with hits like "Runaround Sue," Dion, a Bronx native, found that commercial success did not fill a deep inner void.

He struggled with a 14-year heroin addiction, hiding his torment behind a successful persona.

At a low point, a 12-step program led him to surrender his life to a higher power. He found God's grace, which he describes as a "divine exchange".

He returned to the Catholic Church, finding "freedom to take his career and family life in new directions". He has remained sober for over 50 years.

In his later career, Dion focuses on sharing his journey of faith, and in 2025 released a book detailing his spiritual transformation.

Contrary to his Bronx upbringing where surrender was seen as weakness, Dion learned that true strength is surrendering to his Creator.

He attributes his recovery to "divine grace" and finding his true identity as a child of God.

On April 1, 1968, Dion experienced a profound spiritual awakening. After observing his father-in-law, Jack, find deep peace through prayer, Dion knelt by his bed and asked God to take away his obsessions. He describes that moment as the day the chains of alcohol and drugs were broken.

Dion now uses his music to explore life's larger questions and share his message of hope and redemption.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dion DiMucci overcame a severe 14-year heroin addiction in 1968 through a profound, spirit-led conversion back to his Catholic faith, transitioning from a life of emptiness to one of sobriety, service, and spiritual purpose. His story highlights surrendering to God, focusing on inner transformation, and the power of prayer

1. Jesus heals the centurion's servant (Matthew 8)

2. Jesus heals a man possessed (Mark 1)

3. Jesus heals a paralyzed man (Mark 2)

4. Jesus heals a man blind since birth (John 9)

5. Jesus raises Lazurus from the dead (John 11:17-45)

Though he spent years in evangelical circles, Dion eventually returned to his Catholic roots in the late 1990s after seeing a program on EWTN. He now describes himself as a "ferocious Catholic" and is active in prison ministry and addiction recovery outreach.

For Dion, the Rosary is not just a ritual but a way to anchor himself in peace and moral clarity.

He shares his belief that regular prayer and the teachings of the Church provided him with "spiritual tranquility" and the strength to keep his family together.
