What is the most witnessed Marian apparition of the 20th century?
Most would say Our Lady of Fatima in 1917, where approximately 70,000+ people witnessed the Miracle of the Sun.
However, most prolifically witnessed miracle of the Virgin Mary in the 20th century, and perhaps ever, was at Zeitoun, Egypt from 1968 to 1971.
The Marian apparitions at Zeitoun, Egypt (1968-1971) were widely witnessed by millions of Muslims, Christians (Coptic, Catholic, Protestant), and secular individuals, including Egyptian President Nasser, and were officially recognized as authentic by the Coptic Orthodox Church and the local Catholic Patriarch, Stephanos I, though the Vatican hasn't issued a definitive global declaration, the events are accepted as genuine divine manifestations within Egypt by both major Christian denominations, with a basilica later built on the site.
While the Roman Catholic Church hasn't issued a universal decree, the local Catholic authorities recognized it, and the event is firmly accepted as a significant miracle by Egyptian Christians and recognized internationally as one of history's most observed Marian apparitions.
The Vatican's position was to defer judgment to the local Coptic Orthodox Church, as the events occurred within its jurisdiction and at a Coptic church.
Pope Paul VI sent a Vatican envoy to Cairo to observe the events. The representatives reportedly witnessed the luminous figure and sent a favorable report back to the Vatican, and expressed respect for the event.
Estimates suggest that between one million and several million people witnessed the apparitions. Witnesses included Coptic Orthodox, Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, Jews, and atheists.
The Egyptian President, Gamal Abdel Nasser, was among those who reportedly witnessed the luminous figure.
The first report came from non-Christians; Muslim bus mechanics initially believed a woman was about to jump from the church roof before realizing she was a glowing, floating figure.
The Egyptian government conducted thorough investigations, including shutting off all electricity in a 15-mile radius to rule out artificial light projections. The apparitions continued despite the blackout.
Police and military authorities searched a 15-mile radius for hidden projectors or electronic devices and found no equipment capable of producing such images.
The Egyptian State Information Service and the Coptic Orthodox Church both issued official statements confirming the phenomena as genuine and scientifically unexplainable.
Numerous photographs and film footage were captured by independent photographers and Egyptian television. While many historical photos are grainy or of poor quality, they consistently depict a luminous figure above the church domes.
Hundreds of spontaneous healings were reported, including recoveries from cancer, paralysis, and blindness.
One of the first witnesses, Farouk Mohammed Atwa, reportedly had a finger scheduled for amputation that was instantaneously healed after the first apparition.
