The Catholic Defender: The Catholic Faith of Jason Patric

While actor Jason Patric does not frequently speak about his personal religious views in public, his life, family legacy, and career are deeply intertwined with the Catholic faith.

Patric, who is of predominantly Irish descent, was raised in a culturally Catholic environment and attended Catholic schools on both coasts.

He attended this all-boys Salesian Roman Catholic school located in Ramsey, New Jersey.

After moving west, he completed his education at this Catholic school in Santa Monica, California, where he participated in high school theater productions.

Patric's family tree features prominent Hollywood figures whose own identities were tied to Catholicism.

His Father (Jason Miller): His father famously played Father Damien Karras, the troubled Jesuit priest in the 1973 horror classic The Exorcist. Miller studied at The Catholic University of America and was cast in the film largely due to his real-life Catholic background.

His Grandfather (Jackie Gleason): His maternal grandfather was the legendary comedian and actor Jackie Gleason, who grew up in a strict Irish-Catholic household.

Patric’s background has subtly intersected with his professional choices.

Patric starred as Lorenzo "Shakes" Carcaterra in this gritty drama, where the plot revolves around a group of boys from Hell's Kitchen and their relationship with a local parish priest, Father Bobby (played by Robert De Niro). The film heavily explores Catholic themes of sin, confession, justice, and systemic corruption.

The Passion of the Christ (2004): Proving his deep ties to these themes in Hollywood, Patric was reportedly Mel Gibson’s initial choice to play the role of Jesus Christ, but he turned the offer down. The role eventually went to Jim Caviezel.
