The Catholic Defender: Hosanna “I beseech Please Save Us.” “yasha”

“yasha” which means to cause or to bring about salvation, “to save or deliver”

Save us, we beseech you, O Lord! O Lord, we beseech you, give us success! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord. Psalm 118:25-26

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

In the feast of Tabernacles there was a remembrance of their dwelling in tents, or booths, in the wilderness, as well as their fathers dwelling in tents in Canaan; to remind them of their origin and their deliverance. Christ's tabernacling on earth in human nature, might also be prefigured.

As Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem before his death, the people laid down their cloaks and palm branches along the road and sang:

they took palm branches* and went out to meet him, and cried out:

“Hosanna!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,

The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying:

“Hosanna* to the Son of David;

blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord;

hosanna in the highest.”

Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out:b

“Hosanna!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

10Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come!

Hosanna in the highest!”

as a cry by the people for salvation and rescue.

The priest then starts the Eucharistic Prayer and just before the consecration, the people say: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

holy, holy, holy lord God of hosts.Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

calling out for the Messiah. We sing hosanna each Mass as part of the 'holy, holy, holy' prayer, when we ask Jesus to come and renew us once more in the New Covenant of His Body and Blood.

Hosanna is our plea for God to save. Hallelujah expresses our praise to the Lord for the hope of salvation and exaltation.
