No, the Vatican did not condemn Medjugorje, and in fact, Pope Francis granted approval for devotions linked to Medjugorje in August 2024. The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith recognized the spiritual fruits received at the Sanctuary of the Queen of Peace. The approval was made possible by recognizing the positive fruits of the spiritual experience in Medjugorje.

The belief is that the Virgin Mary has been appearing to six children in Medjugorje since June 24, 1981. The Vatican has specific regulations for investigating Marian apparitions, and only 16 have been deemed “worthy of belief”.

Granting Medjugorje the status of an approved Catholic shrine is among the recommendations that the Vatican Commmission on Medjugorje handed over to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) on January 17, Cardinal Vinko Puljic of Sarajevo told the Croatian news portal Dnevnik.

This document authorized the granting of a nihil obstat (Latin, “nothing obstructs”) for the phenomena, provided certain clarifications are understood.  “Nihil obstat — Without expressing any certainty about the supernatural authenticity of the phenomenon itself, many signs of the action of the Holy Spirit are acknowledged ‘in the midst’ of a given spiritual experience, and no aspects that are particularly critical or risky have been detected,

he cardinal said pilgrims are still free to visit Medjugorje, upholding what has been the status quo since the bishops of then-Yugoslavia decided to allow visits in April 1991.

Reportedly, the findings of the Vatican Commission on Medjugorje allow for favorable judgment, but only in a partial form, since the apparitions are ongoing.

 The Commission found real and significant fruits in the form of conversions, and no evidence of fraud, deception or abuse.

Putting more energy than it is required to do it, yet not in our own strength, but that which comes from God.

Scripture says that our Lord, Jesus Christ, spoke to Moses from a burning bush. But, like the Three Youths, the bush was not consumed by the divinity of God. It was another image of Mary – another way to understand how God was united with humanity in the Virgin's womb!
