The Catholic Defender: The March For Life Remembers Norma McCorvey

Recently, the news have reported the crowds of women protesting President Donald Trump in Washington D.C. but yet, when it comes to the annual Pro-life March, with the exception of EWTN, the media is largely silent.

This year, Vice President Pence is participating in the Pro-life March and maybe someone might speak on it. The fight against abortion goes back to the 1970's. President Trump spoke to the large crowd via from the White House Garden supporting the 45th March for Life.

I remember the 1970′s fairly well, I remember being a Los Angeles Lakers fan as I followed then Basketball great, Wilt Chamberlain, I loved the Kansas City Chiefs who started out the 1970′s winning Superbowl IV. I was involved in sports all my life, I guess you can say I was raised as an average America kid living on a farm in southern Missouri.

On the farm, taking care of the live stalk, riding horses, rounding cattle, living about seven miles from the school I worked hard. To be able to play ball, I had to use my feet getting home after practices, games, plays, I certainly had a lot of opportunities for character building. I’ll never forget walking and running home in the rain, snow, ice, heat, that’s how strong my desire was to play ball.

At that time, my Catholic Faith was still growing, the usual debate between Mom and I was where were we going to Mass, Stockton, where they had donuts after Mass or Humansville where Mom thought it was much closer. I am so thankful for my Mother’s strong faith which really gave me a great foundation for my faith.

Unfortunately, I was not much about the news and when the issue of Roe V Wade going up to the Supreme Court in 1973, I was too young to realize what was going on.

It wasn’t until Ronald Reagan ran for President against Jimmy Carter that I first became aware of what took place that dreadful day on January 23, 1973.

I was amazed that Jimmy Carter was a Baptist who defended abortion? It was here that I understood what Christ meant when He spoke about those who lifted the traditions of men above the Law of God. Those who place their political party above the Church?

Those who were wanting to legalize Abortion originally sought to win States over to their cause, but even the most liberal States where they thought they could get a foot hold didn’t support Abortion. So, as liberals do when they can’t win with the vote, they took it to court.

This is where Norma McCorvey becomes involved in this tragic story. Norma McCorvey was raised in a bad family situation where she suffered abuse, by age 13 her parents divorced, and she would drop out of high school. McCorvey would marry Elwood McCorvey at age 16 where she continued to suffer from low self esteem, drug abuse, and could never find that love that gave her self redemption. She would have two children, but coming from a poor environment, in 1969, a third pregnancy became very difficult for her. She ended up giving this child up for adoption.

Friends of hers encouraged her to claim this pregnancy was due to rape, and by this time, Liberal feminists Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee were looking for a case they wanted to use to challenge State Laws banning abortion.

Since no State would support their demand for abortion, they wanted to push the courts and they found Norma McCorvey through an adoption attorney?

Do you think that the Feminist Women’s movement wanted to make Norma McCorvey an Icon for Women’s rights? Not at all, they used Norma giving her the identity of “Jane Roe” and in March, 1970, the case was brought forward using the “all women similarly situated” base to challenge State Law through the Supreme Court.

Being from Texas, Texas Law banned abortion so the Feminist took the case to Washington. It took the Supreme Court until 1973 before the case was brought before them. The consideration that the Court used for abortion: “Does the Constitution embrace the right of a woman to obtain an abortion, nullifying the Texas prohibition?” For this question, the Court had to dehumanize the unborn child. The Fetus, a Latin word meaning “small person” had to be reused to dehumanize the child.

What the Court originally ruled was to allow abortion setting up conditions of the first, second, and third trimesters. Question concerning when life was viable had a small part to play, but for several years, the Feminist took the argument pushing abortion for cases of rape, incest, deformation of the child, and mother’s life. However, in the past few years, the Feminist have all but dropped this line of argument and totally pushed the “woman’s right to choose” giving no reason for an abortion. Abortion is simply classified for mental hardship, work, financial issues knowing that politics would cloud the issue among voters.

The Supreme Court ruled that a woman had the right to privacy (Griswold v. Connecticut) and based their decision of the 14th Amendment.

This decision took away the voice of the people and the States, giving the right for abortion during the pregnancy with some regulation of the second and third trimesters.

Since this dreadful decision, nearly 60,000,000 unborn children have been butchered and paid for using tax dollars.

In the early years following this decision, Norma McCorvey remained hidden in the public mind, she would always be this mysterious “Jane Roe” that legalized abortion.

Eventually, Norma McCorvey came out in public revealing her true identity. As a result, she did receive the threat of violence, even gun shots aimed at her house. She also was harassed in public places like grocery stores. Finally, she moved to Washington D.C. where she began working in abortion clinics.

In 1994, Norma McCorvey published her book, “I am Roe: My Life, Roe V.Wade, and Freedom of choice”. Clearly, in the early years following the Supreme Court’s terrible decision, Norma McCorvey would fall under the pro-choice umbrella. Norma would confess, “Back in 1973, I was a very confused twenty-one year old with one child and facing an unplanned pregnancy, At the time I fought to obtain a legal abortion, but truth be told, I have three daughters and never had an abortion.”

How many women today could identify with what happened to Norma McCorvey who was abused as a child. Stats continue to show that one in three girls are abused. Consider what this abuse does to the child.

It is horrible, robbing the self-worth of those being abused, the vast majority coming from a relative, a father, an uncle, a cousin…

Many of these women follow that modal, they get involved in drugs, prostitution, this just angers me to no end.

Those who do this kind of abuse needs to be in prison with no chance of parole. This subject bothers me because these girls deserve a chance to be who they want to be, they have self respect. As fathers, our daughters should be the apple of our eye, but this darkness that bind men, I believe through pornography as a great influence, should be destroyed.

Something happens to Norma McCorvey in 1995, something that defies all human logic and understanding, she has an encounter with the risen Christ. She finally accepted the one who was with her through her dark years.

In 1998, Norma was fully received into the Catholic Faith where she receives the great Sacraments of forgiveness and healing. She receives the King of kings and Lord of lords at Mass.

Just doing this story brings tears to my eyes as Norma McCorvey truly finds peace and redemption. And for me she represents all those children being abused who so desperately needs to find the Light of Christ.

Norma McCorvey today says, “Today as a born again Christian and faithful Catholic, I am working to reverse Roe and I am urgently asking for your help right now,” she also states, “I think it’s safe to say that the entire abortion industry is based on a lie…. I am dedicated to spending the rest of my life undoing the law that bears my name,…”

A lot has happened in the fight against abortion which continues to be a major battle, the media largely continues to push the pro-abortion agenda.

Each year the Pro-life demonstrations reach the hundreds of thousands that march upon Washington D.C. as well as State Capital buildings throughout the Country. Yet, this is largely ignored by the media, and despite that vast opposition, the media gives equal treatment with the handful of NOW (National Organization of Women) Gang members who love to attack the marchers.

I was in Iraq when Deepertruth Member, Dr. Gregory Thompson, Ambassador Allen Keyes, Norma McCorvey were among those arrested at Notre Dame standing up for life when President Obama was given an honorary degree and given the chance to speak to the Seniors there.

Here you have a pro-abortion activist turned pro-life defending life against an institution that was suppose to be pro-life that disobeyed the USCCB directive and had the most Abortion politician of all time come and speak?

What a terrible situation that happened there and Dr. Gregory Thompson has shared his story many times how important it is to defend life. No matter where it is or the cost.

John 1:12 states, “But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God;…” 2 Corinthians 5:17 states, “Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” Galation 5:1 states, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

Today, Norma McCorvey stands among the faithful ones, she is a child of God, she is a new creation, she has been set free, no longer a slave. Father Pavone (Priests for Life) speaking of Norma McCorvey, said, “the big temptation on the pro-life side (is) to view this person as a trophy,”

That may be so Father, but for me, her light shines so much brighter now than the darkness ever did for her in her early years. It is enough to see the glory of God’s grace at work here, and again, as we continue to stand against abortion all across the Country.

It is important to vote Pro-life at the voting booth, to know your candidates, and to be that light in your own life for others to see Christ in you. 1 John 4:4 states, ”Little children, you are of God, and have overcome them; for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life, And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion, Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death by the Resurrection of Your Son. I am ready to do my part in ending abortion. Today I commit myself Never to be silent, Never to be passive, Never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement, And never to stop defending life Until all my brothers and sisters are protected, And our nation once again becomes A nation with liberty and justice Not just for some, but for all, Through Christ our Lord. Amen!

Norma McCorvey passed away February 18, 2017. May the perpetual Light of Christ shine upon her now and forever, Amen
