The Catholic Defender: The Ken Billinger Story
Ken Billinger grew up in the small town of Victoria, Kansas, home of the Cathedral of the Plains - now the Basilica of St. Fidelis. He graduated from Victoria High School and attended nearby Fort Hays State University.
Ken has been married to his beautiful wife Patty for 36 years. They have one son, Blaine who died in 2011. Ken has been a cradle Catholic, but didn't practice his faith for many years before returning to the Church in 2003. He absolutely loves his Catholic faith and has been active in his parish as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Lector and has also participated in Christ Renews His Parish, Men of Ascension and Fathers of St. Joseph.
Ken is currently in formation for the Permanent Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. God willing, he will be ordained in June of 2020.
Ken recently began the Lumen Christi Apostolate, charged with "Sharing the Light of Christ with the world". The Mission of LCA is to help others to grow in their faith life and to build a strong relationship with Christ.
In September of 2018, he and his wife Patty launched a new ministry called Project Chrysalis, helping parents who have lost children, by utilizing Sacred Scripture and community. Ken also serves as a volunteer with the St. Dismas Prison Outreach and is a mentor for the Mentoring 4 Success program through the Kansas Department of Corrections, serving the Lansing facility. He enjoys speaking to men's groups and presenting parish missions, and he utilizes his twenty years of radio experience to serve as a host for Catholic radio fundraisers.
For the past eight years, he has been the host for Divine Mercy Radio Care-a-thons on KDVM-FM in Hays, Kansas and KRTT-FM in Great Bend, Kansas. More recently he has been a part of the radio host team of the Catholic Radio Network in Kansas City. Ken is looking to expand and host Catholic radio fundraising opportunities across the country.
One of Ken's passions is to speak to groups and conduct parish missions. A variety of topics are covered from basic Catholicism to the Mass, Confession, and the Eucharist.
In addition, he discusses the importance of fatherhood and the male role as the spiritual head of the home. Ken shares the story of losing a son and how faith, family and the church community helped he and his wife Patty to remain strong through such a difficult time. Stories on his experience with prison ministry and the homeless ministry are also shared with select audiences.
